Wells Scores Twice in Sycamores 3-1 Win Over Fort Wayne

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores defeated the Fort Wayne Mastodons by a score of 3-1 inside Memorial Stadium.

Indiana State returned home tonight (Sept. 15) to take on Fort Wayne after a long four game road stint.

During the beginning of play the Sycamores struggled to generate any attack or control the speed of play.

Continually the ball was lost in the final third and Indiana State could not win a 50/50 ball out of the air in the central midfield. Despite the struggles the Sycamores still provided some threatening chances early on.

Caitly Eddy had taken control of the midfield and was knocking passes forward consistently, but ISU just couldn't capitalize on their early chances.

Then the Sycamores picked up the pace and shifted the momentum into their favor.

In the 24th minute of play Alina Steffen found herself on a breakaway down the right flank. Steffen ripped a shot from 12 yards out, but it was saved by the Fort Wayne keeper.

When the ball bounced down into the box, Tessa Leong was there to finish it off for a goal. This gave the Sycamores a 1-0 lead.

From then on out Indiana State controlled the pace of play. In the 35th minute Katie Wells added Indiana State's second goal of the match when Casidy Simonis intercepted a Fort Wayne goal kick and played a ball forward for Wells. Wells beat the keeper and gently passed the ball into the back of the net.

The Sycamores carried this 2-0 lead into halftime.

Starting the second half, Indiana State didn't skip a beat. The Sycamores carried their momentum from the first 45 minutes into the second half.

Wells came out firing shots repeatedly at the Fort Wayne net and added an early second half goal for the Sycamores.

Leong broke out down the central midfield and slotted a ball to Wells inside six yard box. Wells ripped a shot to the back post for her second goal of the match. This put the Sycamores up 3-0.

"We really started to put the pieces together this game and create more opportunities. Each game is a team effort and we have a variety of players that made an impact today. I am really excited to see where this team is headed for the rest of the season," said Wells.

Indiana State continued to control play for the remainder of the match with Kasey Wallace and Katie Sullivan controlling the back line.

In the 86th minute the Mastodons logged a late goal making the final score 3-1.

The Sycamores had 16 shots and three corner kicks during play with goalkeeper Brianna Riscossa making five saves. Wells came away with four points during the match.

"Tonight was a good team win. I thought the second half we came out with more energy and were more efficient especially in our attacking half. We had a lot of players contribute tonight and were able to keep the high level. We will need to recover quickly and be prepared for a very strong opponent on Sunday," said head coach Julie Hanley.

Indiana State is back in action on Sept. 17 traveling to face off with the Butler Bulldogs at 1 p.m.
