TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State fans make your plans now to support the Sycamore Track and Field / Cross Country programs by attending the John McNichols Cross Country Invitational on the morning of September 9 and then participating in the John McNichols Golf Outing and Wine & Canvas event that afternoon.
John McNichols was the longest tenured head coach in the history of Sycamore Athletics as he served as head track and field and cross country coach for 34 years prior to his untimely death in December of 2016 at the age of 66.
The day begins at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course, located at 599 S. Tabortown St. on the east side of Terre Haute for the John McNichols Cross Country Invitational. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. (ET) with the women's 5k race and continues at 10:00 a.m. with the men's 8k race on the same course which was coach McNichols dream which has eventually led to 12 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships being held in Eastern Vigo County and hosted by Indiana State University.
In the afternoon, the event moves to the Hulman Links Golf Course just a few miles down US Highway 40 at 990 N. Chamberlain St., for the John McNichols Golf Outing and Wine and Canvas event. Fans can have lunch with the Indiana State Track and Field and Cross Country team from Noon until 1:00 pm (ET) at the golf course. An individual lunch ticket costs only $20.
At 1 p.m. a shotgun start will be held for the golf outing at Hulman Links. A team of four and a hole sponsorship costs $500 while a team of four is $400. An individual golfer can play for $125 while a hole sponsorship costs $100.
During the golf outing a wine & canvas event will be held in the clubhouse. Hosted by ISU Track and Field alum Rich and his wife Robin Porter this event includes a fun afternoon of painting and wine tasting. Join talented artist and ISU Track and Field Program Director Angie Martin who will be instructing the class. Martin has taken the lead over many years at ISU Athletics Facilities showing a tremendous ability to paint various logos and murals and will share some of her tips with those attending. This event also begins at 1 pm (ET) and costs $70 which includes the painting class, lunch and wine.
