INDIANAPOLIS — Recently-graduated Indiana State volleyball standout
Bree Spangler is the Missouri Valley Conference nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. The NCAA Woman of the Year program has recognized graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.
Spangler was one of a 543 women student athletes from across the country that were NCAA Woman of the Year nominees from NCAA institutions at all three levels. From that pool, 145 women have now been nominated by conferences for consideration for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, including 58 Division I nominees.
In early September, the Woman of the Year selection committee will name the Top 30 honorees, which include 10 women from each division. At the end of September, the selection committee will select and announce nine finalists, with three from each division. They will then select the NCAA Woman of the Year from those finalists on October 22.
Spangler, a Coldwater, Michigan native, closed out her career at Indiana State as just the fourth player in program history to reach 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills in her career. Over her four seasons in Terre Haute, she amassed 1,179 kills and 1,102 digs. She wrapped up her career with 1,321 total points. In 2016 alone, Spangler went for 265 kills 2.55 K/Set) which was second-best on the squad. She also walked away with 286 digs (2.75 D/Set) and 18 service aces.
She was a star on the court, earning All-MVC First Team honors, but off the court Spangler shined as well. For three consecutive seasons, she was named an MVC First Team Scholar-Athlete and was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Dean's List every year at ISU. Spangler was also a Presidential Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipient in 2017 and a Missouri Valley Conference State Farm Good Neighbor Award recipient.
She also showed a commitment to the Terre Haute community spending numerous hours volunteering with local organizations such as the Terre Haute Boy's and Girl's Club, Special Olympics-Indiana, West Vigo Community Center among others.
After spending so much of her time practicing and traveling with the volleyball team as well as her extracurricular activities, Spangler was also a Student Athlete Advisory Committee member three years, capping off her senior year as the SAAC President.
