Sycamores Come Away with a 2-0 Win in 2017 Season Opener

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State Sycamores defeated the UIC Flames inside Memorial Stadium in their 2017 season opener. ISU defeated Illinois-Chicago 2-0.

A young Sycamore squad took the field tonight (Aug. 18) with a lineup consisting of seven underclassmen, but that didn't have an effect on the outcome.

ISU came out with a strong offensive attack right from the first blow of the whistle. Players were flying forward toward the goal, but everything was missing by inches. Then in the 29th minute Indiana State earned themselves a corner kick.

Junior Caitlyn Eddy knocked the cross into the box where it found Reilly Teal who ripped a shot from eight yards out finding the back of the net and giving Indiana State the 1-0 lead.

Throughout the remainder of the half the Sycamores showed a strong defensive presence and solid organization across the field.
Indiana State carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out in the second half the Flames remained extremely organized making it hard for ISU to break their backline.

The Sycamores continued to be strong defensively with Kasey Wallace blocking numerous shots and winning multiple tackles throughout play.

In the 70th minute ISU was able to break out and sophomore Jazlyn Rowan found herself flying down the middle of the field unmarked. Rowan played a pass forward for Teal who had made a strong run up the left flank. Teal received the pass, beat a UIC defender and slotted a shot into the back post for her second goal of the match.
This extended the Sycamores lead to 2-0.

"I came off the bench and just wanted to make an impact. I was put in a new position that I hadn't played before and I took it and did the best I could and got two goals out of it so it was great. This means everything, this team means everything to me and I am so excited for this season," said Teal.

The Sycamores came away with six shots and two corners during play with Hannah Sullivan making a total of four saves in the shutout.

"I'm really proud of the whole team. We had a lot of new players in new roles, but I am really proud of the effort and the way that we competed," said head coach Julie Hanley.

Indiana State soccer returns to action on Aug. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind. to take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers. The match will kick off at 1 p.m. (ET) inside Memorial Stadium. Admission to Sycamore soccer is free and the match will be televised world-wide on The Valley on ESPN3.
