TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The pairings for the 2017 Missouri Valley / Mountain West Conference Challenge Series have been unveiled by each league office and Sycamore Basketball has been selected to host Air Force on Wednesday, November 29 inside Hulman Center.
Last season the event produced one of the most thrilling games of the year as the Sycamores overcame a 16-point deficit at Utah State and scored their final points on a
TJ Bell game-winning lay-up with two seconds to go for the 62-61 road victory.
Indiana State is 3-3 all-time in the event, which is tied with Northern Iowa for the best record by a current Missouri Valley Conference member. The Sycamores have won two games in a row against the Mountain West Conference with wins in 2015 against Wyoming at home and at Utah State in 2016. Indiana State's other previous victory came in 2009 at home against Colorado State. Last season, each conference picked up five wins in the challenge series which was the second time in the six-year history of the scheduling concept that the series has ended in a tie.
The Sycamores will be facing off against Air Force for the first time in the history of the program. Air Force is the only school among the Mountain West Conference's current membership in which Indiana State has never battled on the hardwood before.
All 10 games in the 2017 Missouri Valley / Mountain West Conference Challenge will take place during a six-day span in late November/early December. The agreement between the two leagues is in the third year of a four-year term.
The Mountain West owns an all-time series edge of 3-1-2 in six previous challenges, which includes an overall advantage of 33-22 in games played in association with the series. The Challenge Series features head-to-head competition between 10 Mountain West and 10 Missouri Valley teams annually, with each conference hosting five games apiece each season.
Annual matchups for teams in the Challenge Series will be based upon factors including the previous year's achievements, records and RPI rankings, as well as projected rankings/strength of teams in the upcoming season, based on composite sources. Each season will be considered separately in terms of matchups, therefore, games from the previous year's Challenge Series may not be returned.
This year's matchups include: Loyola at Boise State (Nov. 28), Utah State at Valparaiso (Nov. 28), Colorado State at Missouri State (Nov. 28), UNLV at Northern Iowa (Nov. 29), Air Force at Indiana State (Nov. 29), Illinois State at Nevada (Nov. 29), Evansville at New Mexico (Nov. 29), San Jose State at Southern Illinois (Dec. 2), Drake at Wyoming (Dec. 2) and Bradley at San Diego State (Dec. 3).
Television rights for each Challenge Series contest will be controlled by the home team's conference television agreement, which will dictate the distribution of the game and all related matters, including tip times.
