Timlin ends historic career at USA Track & Field Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sycamore All-American David Timlin gave a valiant effort in the first round of the 1500-meter run at the USA Track & Field Championships, but ended up falling short of making finals in a loaded field of competition on Friday night.

His time of 3:46.38 came in typical Timlin fashion, as he found himself at the back of the pack through the first three laps. Going into the final lap in dead last, he managed to take it up a notch and run a 56.65 split to improve his position by three spots, finishing ninth in his heat and 29th overall.

"Considering the build-up of the season, I'm very proud of this result, not necessarily today, but the fact that week by week I gave my best to represent myself, my school, and my coaches," Timlin said.

Timlin's historic career came to a close on Friday night, and he leaves Indiana State as one of the best men's middle-distance runners in school history. This season alone he saw numerous successes including earning Second Team All-American honors with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, winning yet another MVC title in the 1500-meters, repeating as the Drake Relays champion in the 1500 and breaking his own school-record last week in Portland with a time of 3:39.82 (only .05 off of the MVC record).

For his career, Timlin earned three All-American honors with his three trips to Eugene, which goes along nicely with his six MVC titles – three of which came in 2016 where he was named both the indoor and outdoor MVC Most Valuable Athlete. He is also the Indiana State career leader indoors in the mile (4:00.42) and 3K (7:58.59), as well as the 1500 record holder outdoors at 3:39.82, run just last week.

"David has had a great career," head coach Angela Martin said. "He has represented ISU at the highest level and we are all very proud of him."

The weekend is not over for the Sycamores, with Marcus Neely set to compete Saturday at 2:20 p.m. ET in the 110-meter hurdles. Felisha Johnson will follow in the shot put at 3:30 p.m. ET.
