ST. LOUIS – Indiana State has been chosen to host the 2018 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which are slated for May 11-13, 2018.
This is the second time in three years that ISU has been chosen to host the outdoor championship meet, as ISU last hosted in 2016 – the first season that the outdoor championships had three days of action on ESPN3.
The Gibson Track & Field Complex is located on the banks of the Wabash River at the intersection of First and Chestnut Streets right on the western edge of Indiana State's campus. The facility was completed for $4.3 million as the first project of Terre Haute's Riverscape development area.
The Gibson Track & Field Complex is named for longtime Indiana State supporters Max and Jackie Gibson and their family, whose gift enabled initial construction of the facility. The Gibsons were also instrumental in the development of the nationally renown
LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, which has hosted the NCAA Championships a total of 12 times since 2002.
The complex was completed in the spring of 2015 and dedicated before a standing-room crowd at the Gibson Invitational on April 16, 2015. A three-story press box facility was completed in May 2016.
Included at the facility is a state-of-the-art 400-meter track, as well as accommodations for multi-directional options for all NCAA field events. A Daktronics video board also adorns the northwest corner of the facility with the option for multiple video boards elsewhere throughout the facility for larger meets.
These site awards were approved by the league's Joint Committee (faculty athletics representatives, directors of athletics and senior woman administrators of each institution) and are subject to ratification at the MVC Presidents' Council meeting on June 13.
