Sycamores Drop Series Opener at No. 13 Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Indiana State baseball's season long six-game winning streak came to an end Friday night at Hammons Field as No. 13 Missouri State continued their dominance of the Missouri Valley, taking the series opener 14-4.

The Sycamores (24-21, 10-6 MVC) started off blistering hot, scoring two runs in the first three innings to jump on top of the Bears, 4-0. With the bases loaded in the first Clay Dungan doubled to right to score Dane Giesler and Dane Tofteland who reached earlier in the inning.

The Trees would come back to score two more runs in the third, first on a Tony Rosselli single to center followed by Dungan going for his third RBI of the game with a single into left.

Sycamore starting pitcher Will Kincanon was solid for the first couple innings, striking out five and forcing a double play in the first. In their second time through the order, the Bears figured Kincanon out, knocking in six runs in the third to go on top.

A pair of walks for the Bears (34-14, 15-0 MVC) put a runner in scoring position before MSU capitalized on a throwing error, scoring both runs. Justin Paulson singled in another run before Missouri State standout Jake Burger put the Bears ahead for good with a two-run blast to left field.

Indiana State was not able to record an out in the fourth until Kincanon had faced seven Missouri State batters. The right-hander was lifted later in the inning for senior left-hander Trent Lunsford who tossed two innings, allowing a pair of runs. With the loss, Kincanon falls to 5-5 on the season.

Missouri State added two more runs in the fourth to make it 8-4 and the rest was academic.

Evan Giles, Justin Hill, Tyler Whitbread and Brian Eddy combined to finish the opener for the Sycamores.

Justin Knutson had a solid outing after settling down for the Bears, allowing four runs in six innings on the mound. The lefty struck out six as he improved to 6-2 on the season. Burger led the Bears at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored.

The Sycamores will look to even the series Saturday at 3 p.m. ET for game two of the series. Sophomore Tyler Ward will get the start on the mound for the Trees. The game will air live on The Valley On ESPN3 as well as on Sycamore All-Access with Brian Fritz on the call.
