Terre Haute, Ind.—Indiana State women's soccer hosted their spring tournament today welcoming four other teams from around Indiana and Illinois.
The Sycamores along with IUPUI, Eastern Illinois, University of Indianapolis, and Valparaiso University all faced off in ISU's spring tournament inside Memorial Stadium.
"It was great to be able to host four quality teams who all compete very hard and are extremely well coached. We would like to continue to be able to have events like this in the future," said head coach
Julie Hanley.
Indiana State matched up with Valparaiso at 11 a.m. and then faced off with IUPUI at 3 p.m. The Sycamores fell by a score of 1 to 0 in both contests.
ISU kicked off the first game of the day taking the pitch against the Valparaiso Crusaders from up north. The Sycamores came out a bit slow allowing Valpo to score an early goal. Indiana State picked up their efforts on both sides of the ball from then on out.
Many Sycamores had shot attempts, but could not find the back of the net. The Indiana State defense did not allow another successful play for the Crusaders despite the many aggressive offensive attacks.
"We did some nice things and I felt like we had some really good moments of possession. Unfortunately, a mental lapse cost us the game. I give Valpo a lot of credit as they were able to capitalize on our mistakes. Defensively as a team they made it very difficult for us to generate any real attacking threats," said Hanley.
Following the game with Valparaiso, Indiana State rested up while IUPUI faced off with Eastern Illinois and then the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds took on Valparaiso at 1:40 p.m.
The Sycamores came out much stronger in their second game against the Jaguars.
Katie Wells and
Caitlyn Eddy led the way for the offense, each putting up three shots on goal, including a breakaway from Eddy that barely missed wide.
Pam Silies also added two strong attempts for the Sycamores. Silies ripped a shot from the top of the eighteen yard box which was saved by the mere fingertips of the IUPUI goalkeeper.
Late in the match Indiana State found themselves facing a tough string of offensive attacks from the Jaguars who were able to narrowly slip a ball past
Brianna Riscossa to take the lead.
"At times we connected and moved the ball really well, but our presence in the final third has to be better if we want to score goals and get the results we want," said Hanley.
Riscossa and
Hannah Sullivan each had strong performances in goal for the Sycamores, coming up with many big saves throughout each match.
To end the tournament Eastern Illinois took on the University of Indianapolis for the final match of the day.
"We had some great individual moments, but the attention to detail and little things let us down today. We continue to make strides this spring and today hopefully will be used as motivation for our players. This is a resilient group and I have no doubt that we will bounce back and come out ready to train and get better this week."
Indiana State will be back in action for their final spring contest on April 22 at 12:00 p.m. to face off with the Eastern Illinois Panthers.
