Sycamores Wrap Up 2017 Spring Season with 2-1 Win Over EIU

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.—The Indiana State Sycamores wrapped up the 2017 spring season today facing off with the Panthers of Eastern Illinois.

The Sycamores and EIU played a total of three thirty minute periods with the momentum continually switching back and forth to each team.

"Overall the spring was great and very positive. We grew as a team and challenged each other to be more committed both individually and collectively," said head coach Julie Hanley.

Though the score was 0-0 at the end of the first period, ISU had controlled the pace since the first whistle. The backline consisting of Carli Chiatto, Kasey Wallace, Katie Sullivan, and Jordan Denton were solid the full thirty, only allowing EIU to generate one corner kick and no real offensive attack. Offensively the Sycamores were aggressive. Throwing shots at the net, and sending multiple crosses into the box, but they were unable to connect and put one away.

Early in the second period EIU generated a corner kick which resulted in a header goal for the Panther's. Indiana State battled back, and in the 24th minute their efforts paid off. Sophomore Katie Wells applied pressure to the EIU backline and was able to intercept a pass. Wells then took the ball on an all-out breakaway for goal finishing a shot from 10 yards out to even the score.

The momentum stayed in favor of Indiana State from that point on. Early in the final period Wells slid in her second goal of the day off an assist from Lindsey Anstine to give the Sycamores the lead. Another notable performance on the day came from freshman goalkeeper Hannah Sullivan. Sullivan played the entire ninety minutes, making multiple big saves that kept Indiana State in the game.

"I saw a lot of great build up today in our attacking half which is something we have stressed this spring. It was nice to see this translate into the game. I was very proud of the team today and happy to end the spring on a high note," said Hanley.

This win marks the final 2017 spring matchup for ISU. The Sycamores will be back in action this fall and are looking for yet another Missouri Valley Conference tournament appearance and to improve upon their record from last season.

"The next three months for our returning and incoming student-athletes will be huge in determining how successful this team will be in the fall. I have challenged the players and they know what the expectations are as we head into summer. We have a wonderful group of student-athletes who are eager and excited to get back playing again. Lee and I know they will put in the work this summer and continue to push our level of commitment in a way that we can be proud of, that not only represents the soccer program but the entire university as well."
