Marrero sets new meet and facility records in the 800-Meter Run

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Senior Alethia Marrero set the meet and facility record for the women's 800-meter run to get Indiana State off on the right foot at Day One of the Pacesetter Invitational on Friday night.

With three events scored, the Sycamore men lead with 54 points to 20 by Saint Louis. Meanwhile, the Sycamore women are in second with 33 behind SLU's 40.

Marrero won her heat in the 800 prelims with a phenomenal performance at 2:06.33, her first outdoor 800 this season and a three-second season-best of her MVC Indoor winning time of 2:09.17. Her time moved her to 27th in the NCAA, 13th in the East Region and best in the Valley – faster than teammate Brooke Moore's 2:06.74 from earlier this season that was in the lead. Marrero was a First-Team All-American in the 800 in 2015, finishing fifth in the nation.

Moore also had an impressive run in the 800 with a time of 2:08.42, which would have been a meet record if not for Marrero's performance. Brooke's 2:06.74 from two weeks ago is still 32nd in the NCAA, 14th in the East Region, and now second in the MVC.

In the women's hammer throw, sophomore Cassaundra Roper continued to impress, winning the event with a mark of 51.60m (169-03). Her mark of 53.68m (176-01) from last week still sits at fifth in the MVC. Jada Jackson was close behind Roper, finishing second with a mark of 47.33m (155-03).

The Sycamore men claimed two wins as well, with Akis Medrano taking the 5,000-meter run title and Ryan Chestnut taking the hammer throw. Medrano claimed victory in the 5K with a time of 14:52.05, with Chestnut winning the hammer at 53.85m (176-08). Fellow thrower Hunter Schuman finished right behind Chestnut with a mark of 51.75m (169-09), which is eighth in the Valley.

In her first time running the women's 5,000-meter run, sophomore Taylor Rodgers was able to pick up a second place finish with a time of 17:41.68.

Competition resumes tomorrow at noon at the Gibson Track and Field Complex with the field events.
