TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Today, our own
Luke Martin caught up with offensive coordinator
Jeff Hecklinski on how the Sycamore offense has progressed throughout Spring Ball. Below is an annotated transcription of the video above:
On how the offense is responding in general to a brand new scheme:
"I think offensively we're making a lot of strides. There's a lot of good things we're seeing out there. We're seeing some really good football plays. It was nice to hit some deep balls today, we're working hard at it. I think because it's been such a drastic change from a throwing philosophy to what we're doing now, and I think you're starting to see things come together a little bit more. We have multiple formations, and when I talk about multiple formations, it's countless. Run schemes, pass schemes, protection schemes – really, it's more of what football used to be than what it is right now, and we do it moving fast."
On which position group has made the most strides this spring:
"I think (the wide receivers) have come the longest way, and they had the farthest way to go, too, with our route running and what we do with all the different releases and stems and arcs and the different places we put them. They have to block here now, where before it was an RPO (run-pass option) offense, so they were running routes based off that. That adjustment that they've made, I think they've come the farthest way, but we still have a long way to go there. We're not as deep there as some of the other positions, so some of the freshmen and other kids we have coming in will have to add to what we're doing."
On the possibilities with a deep backfield of running backs:
"We are four-deep, and we are possibly five-deep. I think there's a lot of good talent, but we've got to find ways to use them and utilize them and keep them on the field. We've got to find ways to get them into space because they're fast, and they can make a guy miss and go. We are committed to running the football."
