TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State basketball head coach
Greg Lansing announced this evening that Terre Haute native De'Avion Washington has signed a national letter of intent and will join the Sycamore Basketball program in time for the 2018-19 campaign. This is the second NLI for the Sycamores during the current signing period as West Des Moines, Iowa native Blake Brinkmeyer put his name on the dotted line Wednesday.
Washington, a 6-3, 170 guard from Terre Haute, Ind., and South Vigo High School currently plays for coach Maynard Lewis as the Braves are beginning preparations for his senior year. Washington has been a member of the Braves' varsity squad for the last three seasons, and have gone 57-23 during that time including a sectional championship two years ago. Last season, Washington averaged 19.6 points, 2.6 steals and 2.1 assists for the Braves. He shot 56 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range.
"'D' is a special young man," coach Lansing commented. "He oozes positive energy every time you see him with that big smile on his face. I want to be around guys like him. We've done very well with local guys here and that's always special for the player, the program and our fans. D was highly recruited and we had to work hard with he and his family but this is where he always wanted to be."
He also starred on the Indiana Junior All-Star South team in June and played in several exhibition contests around the state. Also in the summer, Washington played for the George Hill G3 Grind 17U team.
"He is a really good player that is going to get much better," coach Lansing commented. "He's been well coached by Maynard as well as his AAU program and this year he can really come into his own. He's always been a great athlete but he has worked very hard on all his other skills and become a very versatile player. What I've really gotten excited about is his competitiveness and how he has wanted to be a great defender. We're thrilled to have 'D' join the Sycamore Basketball Family."
Indiana State hits the hardwood for the first time Friday night when they travel to Assembly Hall in Bloomington to take on the Indiana Hoosiers. The game will tipoff at 7 pm (ET) and will be live streamed on a pay-per-view basis on the Big Ten Network Plus.
