Indiana State Battles Hard on Day Two of the Bearcat and Purdue Invitationals

CINCINNATI, Ohio – Indiana State swimming and diving wrapped up day two of their mid-season meets carrying their momentum from yesterday (Nov. 16) into the preliminary and final sessions of today (Nov. 17).

After finishing strong in the day one finals session, the Sycamores main goal was to continue improving during their preliminary session this morning and the young squad achieved this goal.

Blanca Saez-Illobre started the day off for the Sycamores finishing first in the 400 IM where she posted a time of 4:27.53. Saez-Illobre later broke the Indiana State 100 breaststroke school record with a time of 1:06.90.

Kendall Hansen added another notable performance in the 100 backstroke where she broke the ISU school record with a time of 56.85.

"As a whole we did a good job racing when we look at the entire process of setting ourselves up for success. We were solid across the board during the morning session and were looking to swim even faster during the finals," said head coach Matt Leach.

The Sycamores kept this goal as they came out hot during the evening finals session.

The relay team of Hansen, Megan Schade, Jacquie Price and Alex Malmborg started off the night with a fourth place finish in the 200 medley relay with a 1:48.06.

Saez-Illobre followed this with a 4:26.56 and third place finish in the 400 IM as Price and Shade each finished strong in the 100 butterfly. Saez-Illobre later recorded a new ISU school record in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:06.72.

Hansen yet again added a standout performance for the Sycamores in the 100 backstroke as she posed a time of 57.30 and a seventh place finish.

The freestylers finished off the day on a high note for Indiana State as they swam an untraditional relay event.

Martina Marks, Saez-Illobre, Marlene Pavlu Lewin and Cierra Campbell posted a time of 7:46.49 in the 800 freestyle relay which was a new ISU school record.

"All in all we achieved our goal of improving our times and recording faster swims. Even though we had people swimming tired, we had people swim hard all throughout the day from the first to last event. We still have a long way to go, but as a whole we can see the team is working hard to improve every aspect of their swimming," said Leach.

The Indiana State divers yet again faced tough competition in the Purdue Invite.

Laura Fulton finished 30th overall in the one meter dive scoring a 144.90 as Mckenzie Plummer finished close behind with a 136.55.

"We did a nice job today, but we can see the weaknesses that we need to work on for the remainder of the season. I believe they can do even better than they have so far," said diving coach Fengting Chen.

The Indiana State swimmers will be back tomorrow morning (Nov. 18) to face off with their competition in the preliminary heats at 10 a.m. with the finals taking place at 5 p.m.
