Indiana State Falls to Northern Iowa Closing Out the 2017 Season

Box Score CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Indiana State women's soccer team finished off the 2017 season today (Oct. 26) as they fell to the Northern Iowa Panther's 2-0.

"We battled today, but just weren't able to find a goal and gain momentum. It's not the season we had hoped for, but I am confident in the progress we made this season. I know that this team has a lot to look forward to and can build off the strides we made this fall," said head coach Julie Hanley.

During the first half of play both teams found themselves not only in a battle with each other, but also the elements.

High winds proved to be a factor for the Sycamores defensive line as Northern Iowa was able to use the weather in their advantage.

The Panthers came down field with numerous aggressive offensive attacks throughout the half earning themselves two shots total.

Kasey Wallace, Katie Sullivan, Reilly Teal and Jordan Denton fought hard and remained organized not allowing UNI to find the back of the net during the first half of play.

The Sycamores struggled to move the ball forward and generate offensive attack.

Indiana State played numerous balls forward to senior forward Elly Freesmeier and junior Katie Wells, but could not connect on anything.

The Sycamores and Panthers remained locked into a 0 to 0 tie going into halftime.

Coming out in the second half both teams noticed the substantial temperature drop and found themselves yet again dealing with the elements.

Indiana State found themselves struggling in the offensive third yet again, however this was not the case for Northern Iowa.

The Panthers came out aggressive and earned two goals early into the second half.

In the 61st minute the Panther's found themselves on a breakaway down field. Jenny Wick slotted a ball forward to Brynell Yount who slipped a shot into the back post putting UNI up 1-0.

Only three minutes later the Panther's struck again. Yount took the fall from the right flank and tore off toward the central midfield. After beating a Sycamore defender one vs. one Yount narrowly slipped the ball past Riscossa for her second goal of the match.

The Panther's defeated the Sycamores 2-0 as ISU finished with two shots and two corner kicks as Brianna Riscossa made one save.

Indiana State provided numerous notable wins in 2017 including a 2-1 win over the defending Horizon League Champion Northern Kentucky Norse on Aug. 25.

The Sycamores also defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 2-1 on Oct. 14. This was only the fourth time in program history that Indiana State has defeated the Redbirds, and was the first victory over Illinois State since 2008.

ISU finished the season with a 6-10-1 overall record. The young Indiana State roster will say goodbye to only three seniors as Wallace, Freesmeier, and Simonis will not be returning next fall.

"It's always tough to have a season come to an end because we have to say goodbye to an amazing senior class. These three have truly exemplified what it means to be a student-athlete and it has been an absolute joy getting to work with them and be their coach the past two seasons. They have set a high standard for future classes and I have no doubt they will be successful in their future careers, I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for this program," said Hanley.
