TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's soccer will travel to face off with Northern Iowa on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m.
The Sycamores enter the match coming off a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to the Valparaiso Crusaders.
Both teams battled throughout the match, each one looking for a vitally important Missouri Valley Conference win. Each team fired six shots in the second half as they remained evenly matched.
In the 65
th minute Valparaiso's efforts paid off as Grace Rogers sent a long, 30 yard overhead pass finding the head of Cory Griffith on the Sycamore's back post who placed it into the net for a goal.
Only five minutes later the Sycamores answered with one of their own.
Caitlyn Eddy beat a Valparaiso midfielder one on one and went off on a breakaway down the central midfield. Eddy played a through ball forward, splitting the Valparaiso backline, where she found
Alina Steffen who took one touch and shot putting the ball in the back of the Crusader's net. This tied the match at 1-1.
The Sycamores found themselves in a stalemate yet again, as both teams continued to push forward offensively accumulating multiple fouls on each side.
Then, in the 85
th minute Valparaiso found themselves on the attack yet again. A shot from the left flank resulted in a scrum inside the Sycamore's 18 yard box. Natalia Kontul touched the ball forward where Griffith slid and barely got a foot on the ball to give Valparaiso the game winner.
Indiana State will now face off with the Northern Iowa Panthers in their final match of the 2017 season. UNI currently holds a 11-4-1 overall record with a 3-3-0 record in MVC play.
Sarah Brandt leads the way for the Panthers holding a total of 19 points on the year coming from six goals and seven assists overall.
The Panthers most recently fell to Loyola in a tight back and forth match with a final score of 3-2.
Currently
Katie Wells leads ISU with a total of 14 points on the year. However,
Tessa Leong leads the Sycamores in conference play with five points coming from two goals and one assist.
Alina Steffen,
Sydney Hamker, and Wells trail Leong with four points each in MVC play.
