Brandan Bettenhausen joins the Sycamores as throws coach, Kyle Walsh and Jeff Martin promoted to Associate Head Coaches

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Indiana State track and field coaching staff is now complete with the addition of new throws coach, Brandan Bettenhausen.

Going along with the addition of Bettenhausen, Program Director Angela Martin also announced that Kyle Walsh has been promoted to associate head coach for cross country, and Jeff Martin has been elevated to associate head coach for track and field.

"We finally have our staff set and the wheels are headed in the right direction," head coach Angela Martin said. "Adding coach Bettenhausen to this group brings in another person with a deep passion for our sport."

Bettenhausen joins the Sycamores coaching staff from Dayton, where he had been the throws coach for four years. When he joined the Flyer's coaching staff, he inherited a program that only had two throwers, but he was able to quickly turn the Flyers into a dominant group in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

"I'm very excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the Indiana State track and field family," coach Bettenhausen said. "The Sycamore throws program is traditionally very strong, and the potential here is outstanding. I look forward to getting to work."

During the 2016-17 season, Bettenhausen had five Atlantic 10 Conference champions between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Sophomore standout Erin Reese won hammer throw at the A-10 Outdoor Championships and won shot put and weight throw at the A-10 Indoor Championships. Also winning at the A-10 Outdoor Championships were Jennifer Rossi in the shot put and freshman Lillian Cook in the javelin throw.

Bettenhausen sent three athletes to the 2017 NCAA East Regional. Erin Reese and Jennifer Rossi represented Dayton in the discus throw, and Reese also competed in the hammer throw. Lillian Cook competed in the javelin throw.

Rossi swept the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships in the shot put, hammer and discus throws, and picked up victories in the shot put and weight throw at the Indoor Championships as well during the 2015-16 season.

In 2015, Reese earned the A-10 Conference's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer at both the indoor and outdoor championships. At the NCAA East Regional, Aly Weeman represented the Flyer's in the hammer throw and was honored as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team member.

Prior to coaching at Dayton, Bettenhausen spent one year at Western State Colorado University where he was the men's and women's throws coach. While there, he had the opportunity to coach an NCAA Division II provisional qualifier, an All-Regional performed, an All-RMAC Academic recipient, two conference champions and eight Western State Top 10 All-Time performances.

Before he joined Western State, Bettehausen spent one year as a volunteer coach at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin. During his time at Wisconsin, he helped oversee All-Americans, US Olympic Trials qualifiers, indoor and outdoor national qualifiers, eight school records and a Big Ten Conference team championship.

Bettenhausen graduated from Wisconsin in 2011 and was a standout athlete for the Badgers. He earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering. He is also a USTFCCCA certified technical coach and a C.S.C.S. certified strength and conditioning coach.

Program Director Angela Martin also announced that assistant coaches Kyle Walsh and Jeff Martin were being elevated to associate head coaches in cross country and track and field, respectively.

"With the elevation of Coach Walsh and Coach Martin to associate head coaches I feel like we have a stable base of minds that want the best for our Sycamore programs. Everyone on our staff has a deep connection and commitment to Indiana State and our track and field and cross country teams," Martin said.

Walsh has been the head women's cross country coach and assistant track coach for the past three years, but has been promoted to the associate head coach for cross country. Walsh has had success in both cross country and track and field. On the cross country side, he has three All-MVC honorees in cross country. In track he has coached 12 MVC champions, 19 All-MVC honorees, sent six athletes to the NCAA East Preliminary round and four athletes to the NCAA championships.

Coach Jeff Martin is in his 12th year as an assistant coach for the track and field program. He previously specialized in pole vault, long jump and triple jump, but has been elevated to associate head coach for track and field. During his 12 years as an assistant coach, Martin has had eight athletes qualify and compete in the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, where he has coached four national champions and 11 All-Americans. His athletes also have had great success at the MVC Championship as well. He has guided athletes to 33 conference titles and 78 All-MVC awards.
