Terre Haute, Ind.—Indiana State is back in the pool for their final home meet of the 2016-2017 season to face off with Southern Illinois on Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
"This season has been full of hard work, school records and an amazing learning curve for our all freshmen team. We will be looking to polish up all the little details that make fast swimming happen such as starts, turns, stroke mechanics, relay exchanges and race strategy at this final dual meet," said head coach
Matt Leach.
The Sycamores are coming off of a heavy weekend of competition as they welcomed Ball State and Eastern Illinois on Jan. 20 and then turned around and traveled to Indianapolis, Ind. on Jan. 21 to take on IUPUI and Notre Dame.
ISU's all freshmen squad handled the difficult competition well breaking many records, defeating Eastern Illinois and nearly picking off Ball State and IUPUI.
Indiana State defeated the Panther's 170 to 88, but fell to Ball State 194 to 97. The Sycamores set four new school records during the meet. Most notably,
Alex Malmborg swam a lifetime best as well as new school record in the 100 free with a time of 53.36.
Following this meet Indiana State hopped on the bus to travel and face off with IUPUI and Notre Dame for the second time this season.
The Sycamores came out strong narrowly missing their school record in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:49.67. Following this Indiana State rattled off wins over IUPUI in eight events. The final scores included diving which made them not indicative overall of how the team competed.
ISU will now welcome the reigning Missouri Valley Conference Champions, the Southern Illinois Salukis.
"As we prepare for our final dual meet in our inaugural season, we have scheduled the best in the Missouri Valley Conference with defending champions Southern Illinois University. SIU is the best coached, the most talented and best the Missouri Valley has to offer. We look forward to this final step as we prepare for the MVC Championships meet."
The Salukis finished first at last year's conference championship meet and came in second the year before that. Southern Illinois has had another impressive season in 2016-2017 competing against some of the biggest and best universities. Most recently Southern Illinois defeated the University of Arkansas Little Rock 224-74.
The Sycamores are looking forward to preparing further for the conference championship meet on Feb. 15-18, but also excited to compete in their home pool in front of their fans one last time this season.
"Along with our Championship preparation, we will be looking forward to thanking all of our fans, parents and support staff for making this season an incredible inaugural season. Thanks again and we hope to see you tomorrow night, 7pm at the Vigo County Aquatics Center!"
