BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Sophomore All-MVC cross country runner
Brooke Moore kept up her recent string of indoor success and the Sycamore hurdlers took care of business at Day One of the Gladstein Invite on Friday evening at IU's Gladstein Fieldhouse.
Moore – an Elkhart, Ind., native – highlighted the evening for the Sycamores after a career day in the fast section of the women's mile run. Moore finished third at a seven-second PR time of 4:50.73, which jumped her from seventh all-time (4:57.07) to narrowly behind current senior associate AD
Angie Lansing's school record time of 4:50.12 set in 1998. Moore's performance tonight currently ranks No. 37 in the NCAA.
Moore's performance also adds to the growing resume of women's distance coach
Kyle Walsh, whose runners now own four of the top-five mile times in school history – all ran within the last two seasons. After Lansing and Moore in the top-five are
Brittany Neeley (4:51.09, 2016),
Taylor Austin (4:51.86, 2016) and
Jessi Conley (4:53.37, 2016).
The Sycamore hurdlers got right back to work with another solid night on the track. In the men's 60-meter hurdles, three Sycamores – past and present – made it through to the final. Senior
Marcus Neely was the top-collegiate finisher at a new season-best time of 7.87 in the final (after running 7.97 in the prelim). Neely now ranks tied for eighth in the NCAA and isn't far off from breaking his career-best of 7.85, his runner-up time at the 2016 MVC Indoor Championships.
Fellow senior
Daley Carter finished fifth at 8.13 after running the fourth-fastest prelim time at 8.02. Former Sycamore All-American
Greggmar Swift won the event after running 7.80 in both the prelims and finals.
Two Sycamore women also made it through to the 60-meter hurdles final.
Patrycja Dziekonska ran a season-best 8.72 for sixth place in the final after running 8.81 in the prelim, while teammate
Micaela McLean finished eighth at 8.87.
The Sycamore women also showed off some impressive youth elsewhere on the track. Freshman
Imani Davis ran a PR and team-best 56.91 in the open 400-meter dash in just her third meet as a Sycamore. Junior
Oschtisha Jackson also finished high in sixth at a season-best 57.79.
Fellow freshman
Shana Cooper launched herself onto the all-time top-10 list in the 60-meter dash, running 7.64 in the prelim and 7.67 in the final for sixth place.
Senior
Kaitlyn Moricz was ISU's top-finisher in the women's pole vault in third place at a PR height of 3.70m (12-01.50) – just one half-inch outside of the all-time top-10.
Other Sycamore women charting high finishes in the field included
Jamie Newsome in the triple jump (third place, season-best 11.82m/38-09.50) and
Jasmine Noel in the weight throw (fifth place, 17.46m/57-03.50).
Moore wasn't the only Sycamore to have an excellent day in the distance events, as ISU got three great performances in the men's open mile and 5K. Sophomore and All-MVC cross country runner
Akis Medrano was the runner-up in the 5K at an indoor PR of 14:54.29, just one second off his overall outdoor PR.
In the mile, junior
Blake Kramer and
Quentin Pierce clocked in some fast times in fifth and sixth places, respectively. Both ran career-bests, with Kramer at 4:13.84 and Pierce at 4:14.38.
Day Two will resume at 10:45 a.m. with the men's long jump and women's high jump, while the action on the track will begin at 10:50 a.m. with the women's 200-meter finals.
