Terre Haute, Ind.—The Sycamore swimming and diving team earned their second win of their debut season today by beating the Butler Bulldogs 143 to 107.
This was Indiana State's first time back in the pool since finishing up their rigorous winter training program.
"This was a great team victory. We had some sickness and injury creeping in and everybody across the board stepped up. We have been putting in some really good training over the break and I think it shows," said head coach
Matt Leach.
ISU placed first in 13 events. This is a first for the all freshmen squad who has continually shown improvement at every meet this season.
Numerous Sycamores made a name for themselves in the pool today placing first in events including
Cierra Campbell in the 1000 yard free,
Blanca Saez-Illobre in the 200 yard free,
Kendall Hansen in the 100 yard back,
Emily Ratliff in the 100 yard breast,
Elisabeth Peskin in the 200 yard fly,
Emily Boomershine in the 100 free, and
Jacquie Price in the 100 yard fly.
"We came out hot and were able to secure some victories in the first four events, but also set new school records."
The 200 medley relay team started the trend with a time of 1:48.71. Campbell quickly followed that with a new record in the 1000 free with a time of 10:38.13.
Saez-Illobre and Hansen also set new school records in their events the 200 free and 100 back. These times gave Indiana State first place spots in the first four events of the day.
"The way that we look at it is that the beginning of our semester was part of our training to prepare for our season and this is it. It was nice to come out and swim well and start off our 2017 season on a high note."
Along with the records other Sycamores stepped up and contributed to the overall team victory including
Emily Ratliff swimming an in season best time in the 100 breast.
"Everything shown today is all because of the girl's hard work. We couldn't be happier as a staff to see the program take this step forward and we are looking forward to our next dual meet."
ISU is back in action on Jan. 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Vigo County Aquatic Center for a double dual with Eastern Illinois and Ball State.
