TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? The Indiana State track and field teams will travel to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday to compete in the 14th annual Gene Edmonds Cup, part of the Purdue Triangular. Competition begins at 11 a.m. with the field events. The running events will begin at approximately 1 p.m.
Also competing at the Purdue Triangular is the University of Louisville. The Cardinal men's team is ranked ninth in the nation while the women's team is ranked 25th in the nation by the U.S. Track & Field, Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
“Purdue is one of the top teams in the Big 10 and Louisville is one of the top teams in the Big East,” John McNichols, Indiana State men's coach, said. “We are one of the top teams in the Missouri Valley so this meet will bring together a lot of very good athletes. With this kind of competition, we are looking for our athletes to post some good results in their events.”
Some members of the Indiana State track and field team will be competing at the Rose-Hulman Friday Night special tonight and will not be in competition at Purdue on Saturday.
The Gene Edmonds Cup is a competition between Indiana State and Purdue University, initiated in 1995 and named for Indiana State graduate and former Purdue track coach Gene Edmonds. The Boilermakers have held the Cup for the past 13 years.
Edmonds and his wife, Rose, are both Indiana State alumni with Edmonds playing basketball for legendary coach John Wooden. He was a member of the Purdue coaching staff, heading the throws area for the Boilermakers in the 1990s.

Looking Back At Last Week - Both the men's and women's track and field teams remained undefeated in dual meet action with wins last Friday at the Terre Haute Double Dual, hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, site of the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships. The Indiana State posted a 94-56 victory over Illinois State in the Division I competition while the Sycamore women defeated the Redbirds 83-67.
Both ISU teams won three dual meets at the Eastern Illinois University Early Bird on December 12. The Sycamore men defeated Butler 119-22, Eastern Illinois 98-79, and Western Illinois 119-43. The Indiana State women defeated Butler 116-29, Eastern Illinois 93.5-75.5, and Western Illinois 103-48.
ISU PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS FOR NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Major Clay, a sophomore from Springfield, Ill., became a provisional qualifier for the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor National Championship in his first meet as a Sycamore. Clay won the high jump competition at the Terre Haute Double Dual on Jan. 16 with a leap of 7-feet-0.5 (2.15 meters) to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
ISU PROVISIONAL QUALIFIERS FOR NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
Kylie Hutson, a junior from Terre Haute, Ind., became an automatic qualifier for the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships, winning the pole vault at the Terre Haute Double Dual on Feb. 16 with a vault of 13-feet-9.25 (4.20 meters). This will be Hutson's third trip to the NCAA Indoor Championships. The Sycamore received All-American recognition with an 11th place finish at the 2008 Indoor National Championships. She placed 15th in her first appearance in the National Championship in 2007.
Lauren Martin, a junior from Arlington Heights, Ill., became a provisional qualifier for the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships, winning the triple jump at the Terre Haute Double Dual on Feb. 16 with a leap of 41-feet-8 (12.70 meters).
Kelsey Hanley, a sophomore from Arcadia, Ind., became a provisional qualifier for the 2009 NCAA Division I Indoor National Championships, winning the 20 pound weight throw at the EIU Early Bird meet on Dec. 12 with a throw of 63-feet-1.25 (19.23 meters).
Missouri Valley Conference Honors -
FEMALE FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Indiana State junior Kylie Hutson was named the Missouri Valley Conference Female Field Athlete of hte Week on Jan. 20. Hutson automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships after winning the pole vault competition at the Terre Haute Double Dual on Jan. 16.

Several members of the Indiana State men's track and field team are in the top five of the Missouri Valley Conference for the 2009 Indoor season.
In the track events, senior Gary Ogburn is fifth in the 60 meters (6.98), junior Daryl Truitt is tied for third in the 200 meters (22.33), senior Sean Wright has the top time in the 400 meters (48.79), and senior Drake Sterling is third in the 800 meters (1:54.52). ISU has three of the top times in the mile with freshman Jeremiah Vaughan second (4:17.32), junior Scott Keeney third (4:20.34), and senior Kyle Walsh fifth (4:20.55). Two Sycamores are in the top five of the 3000 meters with freshman Craig Padgett third (8:40.06) and sophomore Michael Disher fifth (8:43.18) while three ISU individuals are in the top five of the 60 meter hurdles with sophomore Michael Roberts second (8.26), sophomore Tykeen Fulton third (8.37), and junior Patrick Mendenhall fourth (8.48).
In the relays, the Sycamores have the top time in the 4000 meter distance medley relay (10:21.32) and the second best time in the 4x400 meter relay (3:18.20).
In the field events, ISU has the top four spots in the high jump led by sophomore Major Clay (7-feet-0.5) followed by junior Brandon Youngdale in second (6-feet-10.75), sophomore David Bell in third (6-feet-10.25), and junior Curt Sunderland fourth (6-feet-8.25). Senior Anthony Bertoli is tied for first in the pole vault (16-feet-0.75). Freshman Brandon Pounds is first in the shot put (57-feet-2.75) with fellow freshman George Weed second (52-feet-9.5). Junior Joshua Williams is first in the weight throw (62-feet-5.75) with Pounds currently second (60-feet-11.5).

Senior Heather Stembridge has the fifth best time in the mile (5:12.62).
In the relays, Indiana State has the top time in the 4000 meter distance medley relay (12:45.47) and the second best time in the 4x400 meter relay (3:51.73).
In the field events, the Sycamores have three of the top five spots in the pole vault with junior Kylie Hutson first (13-feet-9.25), and sophomore Alicia Fritschi and senior Nikki Royer are tied for fourth (11-feet-11.75). Junior Annie Beasley has the fifth best leap in the high jump (5-feet-3.25), with junior Lauren Martin having the top mark in the triple jump (41-feet-8) and the fourth best in the long jump (19-feet-1.5). Sophomore Kelsey Hanley has the best throw in the weight throw with a toss of 63-feet-1.25).
