In his final season as the Sycamore wrestling coach, Sanders guided the Sycamores to a tie for 15th in the NCAA Championships. Indiana State was moved up to the University Division in 1966 with the Sycamores tying for 23rd at the 1966 NCAA Championships, tying for 37th in 1967, and tying for 32nd in 1968.
He graduated Brazil High School in 1942 and attending Ball State University before transferring to Indiana University where he earned his Bachelor’s in 1946 and Master’s in 1948. Sanders was a member of the Indiana 1945 Big Ten football championship team.
