Sycamores host the 2024 SAMYS to honor the best in Indiana State Athletics

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Will Staggs, Isabella Henning, Connor Fenlong, Jackson Krieg, and the baseball team were the big winners on Monday night at the SAMYs presented by The Hometown Savings Bank held inside Hulman Center.
 
In addition, the soccer team took home top GPA, the Spirit Squad claimed the Sycamore Cup Award, and the softball team claimed the Bound and Determined award for their run to the 2023 MVC Softball Championship Game to highlight several of the team awards given out at the ceremony.
 
Staggs, an All-American pole vaulter, and Henning, a NFCA All-Region selection at first base, were named the John McNichols Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
 
Team of the Year recognition went to the baseball program after sweeping the NCAA Terre Haute Regional at Bob Warn Field this past spring. Ryan Conwell (Men's Basketball) and Claire Parsons (Swimming & Diving) received Male and Female Newcomer of the Year awards, while Men's Track & Field's Lawrence Mitchell was named the Comeback Player of the Year.
 
The Presidential Scholar-Athletes honoring athletic achievement, academic achievements, qualities of leadership and service to the university and community went to Henning and men's cross country's Jackson Krieg.
 
Baseball's Grant Magill was honored with the Olson-Hill Sapp Award which goes to an athlete who embodies the spirit of the Sycamores, including GPA, positive attitude, support for other athletes, campus involvement, and overall accomplishments. Krieg, Jordan Gruce (Swim), Kaitlynne Panagouleas (Spirit), and Alivia Gilman (Spirit) all received the Gillum Award given to an athlete for the highest cumulative GPA during their time at Indiana State.
 
Established in 2017, the SAMYS have recognized athletes, supporters, and staff for their accomplishments and contributions throughout the year. The evening was hosted by the ISU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and John Sherman, with contributions from Greg Rakestraw, Shay Herbert, and Nick Rush.

  • Female Individual Performance: Claire Parsons (Swimming and Diving – 1650-Free Win at MVC Championships)
  • Male Individual Performance: Connor Fenlong (Baseball – 3 CG Shutouts in May 2023)
