NASHVILLE, Tenn.—The Indiana State softball team fell in a pair of games to Youngstown State and Furman to begin play in the Purple & Gold Challenge in Nashville, Tenn. Friday.
Youngstown State Game
In the first game of the day, the Sycamores struck first in the bottom of the first inning when junior Erika Crissman led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice by junior Kassie Brown.
Junior Brooke Riemenschneider then hit an RBI single to score Crissman and give the Sycamores a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the second the Penguins rallied back to tie the game, scoring one run off one hit.
The top half of the Penguins order kept the offense going through the next few innings, jumping out to a 9-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning.
The Sycamores tried to respond in the bottom of the fourth when freshman Monique Castillo reached on a fielders choice and came around to score when junior Rylee Holland was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Indiana State could get no closer, however, as they fell in the first game by a final score of 12-2.
Furman Game
In the second game of the day, the Sycamores led early before the Furman offense roared to life as they defeated Indiana State 17-7.
The Paladins jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run to make it a 1-0 game.
The Sycamores responded in the top of the second when junior Brooke Riemenschneider led off the inning with a single. Two batters later, senior Mallory Schneid singled to put two runners on. Riemenschneider then scored on a fielding error before Schneid scored on a bunt single by Brown to take a 2-1 lead.
The Furman offense then found its stride as they plated four runs in the third and continued in the fourth to jump out to a 17-2 advantage.
In the top of the fifth, the Sycamores tried to respond, plating five runs before falling by a final score of 17-7.
The Sycamores will continue play at the Purple & Gold Challenge Saturday when they take on Troy at 11 am EDT.
