CONWAY, AR ? The University of Central Arkansas (UCA) Bears may have scored the first two runs of the game, but it was the Indiana State softball team who had more runs on the scoreboard at the end of seven innings to defeat UCA 5-3 and up their record to 7-8 (0-0 MVC).
The Bears took an initial 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when UCA's Courtney Brock hit a two-run homerun.
The Sycamores would match those two runs in the very next inning. With two runners already on base, Christina Meyers hit a single to load the bases for Meredith Simpson. Simpson reached first base on a fielder's choice and senior Lindsey Starwalt crossed home plate on a muffed throw by the Bears' catcher. Junior transfer Britt Boyer stepped up to the plate next and hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing freshman Leslie Fakes to score to tie the ball game at 2-2.
Indiana State kept the bats swinging in the fourth inning. With a runner on third, freshman Reva LeDune doubled to left center to pick up her first RBI of the season. Starwalt bunted to reach first and advanced LeDune to second but both runners crossed home plate on the next at bat thanks to Meyers who doubled down the left field line and registered two RBI.
The Bears would get one of their runs back in the fifth inning but it wasn't enough as the Sycamores won their second game in a row and are 2-0 so far on their seven-game spring break line up. Senior Darcy Wood picked up the win, her third of the season, and Katie Armour came in the game in the fifth inning to record the save.
The Sycamores go at it once again tomorrow versus the University of Arkansas (19-6) in a doubleheader that begins at 3:00 p.m.
