Terre Haute, Ind.—The Indiana State swimming and diving team came out ahead of the IUPUI Jaguars in the swimming part of competition, placing three new school records in the process.
This was the Sycamores second meet of the weekend as they earned their third win of the season over Eastern Illinois last night and just fell short of the Ball State Cardinals.
Indiana State treated the back to back days of competition as preparation for the Missouri Valley Conference meet which will be on Feb. 15 through Feb. 18.
"We came out at the meet and swam extremely well. Going back to back meets can be tough, but again we're trying to prepare our young student-athletes for conference and be prepared for the intensity of swimming back to back days," said head coach
Matt Leach.
In the first event of the day, the 200 yard medley relay, ISU was only a second off of their school record with a time of 1:49.67. Following that
Cierra Campbell,
Elisabeth Peskin and
Katherine Minatra swam well for the Sycamores in the 1000 free.
The Sycamores competed well for the entire meet, but earned their first win against IUPUI in the 200 free and also in the relay. Following this Indiana State came out ahead of IUPUI in eight events.
"When you look at our first meet at Notre Dame and look at this meet against Notre Dame we really have developed quickly. We came out strong, held it, and everyone banded together to post a good performance. When you look at the score overall of the IUPUI and Indiana State meet the overall score is not completely indicative of the swimming side of it."
With diving added into the meet the Sycamores were defeated, but on the swimming side Indiana State was victorious over IUPUI by four points.
"We were able to rattle off more wins from
Alex Malmborg and
Kendall Hansen. We had a great performance from our 500 free crew after this.
Jacquie Price also had an impressive performance working to out touch in the final 25. It was nice to see the girls come through on day two of competition. Coming out with a victory on the swimming side against IUPUI and remaining strong against Notre Dame was great to see."
Indiana State is back in action on Jan. 27 at 7:00 p.m. against conference opponent Southern Illinois.
